Love the Nations

Updated: Jan 27

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 NIV®

Every morning my class started with a devotion and prayer. I started noticing that some of my student's prayer requests were focused on having less homework or good weather so they could go shopping after school. Prayers to calm our anxious hearts are welcomed by a gracious Father. However, as my student's grew in their walk with the Lord my heart was burdened for them to have kingdom focused prayers.

One day I decided that in addition to our regular prayer requests each student would also be handed a prayer card. These cards represented unreached people groups. During our prayer there was about one minute of silence as each student prayed for the people group represented on their card.

If you like this idea, here are some ways you can implement this in your classroom:

1. Use prayer cards from Joshua Project. Their website provides 365 cards that each contain information of an unreached people group. Print and cut out the cards, hand one to each student to keep and pray for to the end of the year. Click here for Joshua Project's prayer cards.

2. Share a short prayer video to help your students learn how to pray for distant nations. Operation World has about 60 short prayer videos. These videos highlight nations around the world. It provides a little insight on the needs of those who live there and lists specific ways to pray. Click here for prayer videos from Operation World.

3. Have your class adopt a specific people group. Make this a project and find as much information you can on those people. If possible, contact missionaries who minister to that group and ask for specific prayer requests. Then share the updates with the class.

These are just a few ways you can help your students have a heart for the unreached. Visit Joshua Project and Operation World to find many more resources.

God bless!
